Inman Gallery is pleased to present Modern Fragments, a solo exhibition of collage works using found photo images by Jim Richard. The exhibition opens March 7 to coincide with the 2026 Fotofest Biennial, Global Visions. A celebratory reception and exhibition walkthrough with the artist will take place on Saturday, March 28 at 1pm. This program will also feature walkthroughs by concurrent exhibiting artists Tommy Fitzpatrick and Maggie Hills.
Jim Richard: Modern Fragments showcases a selection of the artist’s recent photo-collages, an aspect of his studio practice since the early 1990s. Throughout his career he has collected printed source material and early on, was fascinated by the modernists’ embrace of collage. Richard saw these materials as a rich resource of ready-made visual language and began experimenting, finding satisfaction in the ability to work through complete ideas quickly in contrast to his time-intensive paintings. By 1998, collage became an integral part of his studio practice; he would finish every work session with an hour or two of making collages. When he had produced fifty or so finished collages, he considered the exercise complete, and stopped, returning to painting only.
When Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans in 2005, Richard was forced to evacuate, moving to Austin. As he was evacuating, he grabbed the satchel which had been gathering cut paper for 6 – 7 years. In Austin, he was lucky enough to find a studio through the generosity of Annette DiMeo Carlozzi, the founding American and Contemporary Art Curator at the Blanton Museum. For four months, he worked on collages, 7 days a week. Embodying a practical way of working, as a compact and portable medium, it also offered a much-needed outlet: “work[ing] daily during that distressing time kept me feeling grounded and useful” Richard writes.
Making collages is now an essential part of the artist’s practice and we are thrilled to present a selection of recent works for our 2026 Fotofest presentation. Jim Richard: Modern Fragments is on view March 7 – April 18, 2026.
