Jamal Cyrus (b. 1973, Houston, Texas) is a visual artist based in Houston. Ranging from sculpture, to drawing, to performance, Cyrus’ expansive practice draws on the creative strategies of collage and assemblage to invoke and engage the histories of the Black radical tradition. The sociopolitical applications of sound and music are central to his practice, as is the poetic use of unlikely materials, such as papyrus, denim, hominy grits, seashells, and repurposed musical instruments. Embracing abstraction, Cyrus works within an aesthetic tradition that aims to transform the most mundane materials into objects with rich, densely packed networks of meaning and purpose. In doing so, his work brings to light historical narratives and figures that have been systemically erased from view, while simultaneously investigating expressive cultures, spirituality, and resistance within the African diaspora.

His mid-career survey, The End of My Beginning, initiated at the Blaffer Art Museum, Houston (June – September 2021), traveled to the Institute of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, (February – May 2022) and completed its tour at the Mississippi Museum of Art (October 2022 – March 2023).
