| "Day for Night", Whitney Biennial, 2006 opening night |
 |
Amy Blakemore has six photographs included in the current Whitney Biennial. Entitled "Day for Night", the exhibition was curated by Chrissie Iles and Philippe Vergne, who named the exhibition after François Truffauts classic 1973 film.
| The title, "Day for Night", refers to the cinematic technique by which nighttime is shot artificially during the day, using special filters. The curators aimed to capture the artifice of American culture, in all its complexity. A sense of secrecy, obfuscation, and even alienation pervades this rich and complex exhibition, on view through May 28, 2006.
Four of Blakemore's recent photographs were acquired by the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston in the past year.

Demetrius Oliver
Extracts

Halo, 2005
In his first solo exhibition at the gallery, Demetrius Oliver uses his own body and skin as visual context to construct simple yet powerful images that explore a range of social and historical topics. Formally restrained, with each element carefully placed, the work is characterized by a cool, aloof treatment that belies the visceral and sometimes absurd combinations of body and object.
Oliver has also just opened a solo project room exhibition at PS1. Curated by independent curator Nick Stillman, Oliver is presenting two new slide projections. One entitled "Chart" is also currently on view in the north gallery as part of Demetrius' solo show. The other, "Bust", is being shown for the first time.

Anchor, 2005
Demetrius Oliver was born in Brooklyn in 1975 and grew up in South Florida. He earned a BFA at the Rhode Island School of Design in Painting (1998) and an MFA from the University of Pennsylvania in 2004.
